editor’s note
In late February, Houston
begins to go through a brief pink
phase that just tickles me you
know what color. Our big, brawny
all-about-business oiltown softens
its edges and lets its frilly pink and
white “petticoats” show—the
azaleas. You need only look at the
cover of our Landscape Planner in
this month’s issue to know what a
rapturous gift these blooms are to
our city and our collective psyche.
Planting and cultivating azaleas
to get them to realize their best
potential is a true art & science. It
takes planning—and really welldrained
soil. Beautiful landscapes
and gardens don’t just happen. If
you’re thinking of redoing your
lawn, yard or garden, or starting
totally new, it is well worth hiring
a landscape designer at least to
sketch a plan for you if not to
install the plants as well. Some
designers won’t design a plan for
you unless you also hire them to
do maintenance. Others will design
a plan, then give you drawings and
a suggested list of plants and let
you do it yourself.
It can’t hurt to call and ask.
I took the plunge and called a
designer to help me with a small
part of my landscape. I couldn’t

imagine what to do with the tiny,
shady patch I’m trying to cheer up.
He gave me a brilliant sketch and
plant list. I haven’t installed it yet,
but I will someday, so help me. I
truly believe that in the long term,
a good landscape design doesn’t
cost that much and it will save you
time, money and grief and keep
you from investing in plants that
won’t work in your Houston
microclimate.
I feel much the same way
about architects. Good house
design by a good architect saves
you money and brings you joy. I
hope that comes across in our
house feature this month. The
Butterfly Lofts by Houston architect
Heidi Eagleton of Open
Design and Development couldn’t
be more Houston-centric. Screened
porches worked beautifully on
turn-of-the-century Houston
houses, and they work beautifully
on this up-to-the-moment loft, as
well. I love how homeowner Sandy
Steitz’s folk art stands out in the
modern space Heidi designed and
built.
Happy spring. Think pink.
